A creative learning opportunity for Arbor’s fifth graders turned a healthy profit and helped several families. Each year students set up a mall and sell a variety of items – baked goods, books, toys, and other goodies. Besides the obvious number skills the students utilize – multiplication, division, calculating profit – they also engage in planning, organizational and social skills.
The 2006 math mall raised a record $1005 and touched more families than ever, said Kim Bowers, ACA teacher and organizer of the event.
“The money is going toward a surprise present for the parents,” she said. “Students are also buying electric blankets and gifts for families at the Downtown Women’s Center, and helping an ACA student with tuition payments.”
